Do AI schedulers protect your focus time? What the docs say
Short answer: Reclaim is the only product here that says it creates, defends and rebuilds focus time, and it does so on a free plan. Microsoft Viva Insights and Google Calendar cover parts of the job. Skej (ours) is a scheduling assistant, not a focus-time tool, but it won’t book over events on the calendars you select.
This page compares what each vendor’s public pages say about focus time. These are vendor claims, not results.
Three jobs hidden in “protects your focus time”
Products do very different amounts of each:
- Creates focus time: finds and books blocks for you.
- Defends focus time: stops new meetings from landing on it, whether they come from teammates, booking links or an AI assistant.
- Rebuilds focus time: when a meeting does land, moves the block somewhere else that still works.
The products and what they claim
“Not described” means the vendor’s pages do not say.
| Product | Creates blocks | Defends blocks | Rebuilds after conflicts | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reclaim | Yes, from a weekly goal | Optional auto-decline; reactive mode when the week fills; link priority decides whether bookings can take flexible time | Claims to defend around changes | Reclaim pricing, Reclaim 2.0 FAQ |
| Motion | Schedules tasks rather than generic focus blocks | Booking links can’t book over tasks marked “busy” or “fixed” (with task syncing to your calendar turned on) | Recalculates the schedule when plans change | Motion AI calendar, Motion booking FAQ |
| Morgen | AI Planner time-blocks tasks | Not described | Plans are “only scheduled with your approval” | Morgen AI Planner |
| Microsoft Viva Insights focus plan | Yes, up to 4 hours a day, booked 2 weeks ahead, never over existing events | Mutes Teams chats; no auto-decline described | Not described | Microsoft support, Microsoft Learn |
| Google Calendar focus time | No, you create blocks yourself | Optional auto-decline of new, or new and existing, meetings | No | Google Calendar help |
| Skej (ours) | No (blocks time only when asked by text) | Won’t book over existing events on calendars you select; buffers and daily meeting limits | No | Skej calendar help, Skej buffers help |
Clockwise, long the best-known focus-time tool, shut down on March 27, 2026 (Clockwise notice), so it isn’t included.
A note on Skej
Skej is our product, and it isn’t a focus-time tool. It’s a scheduling assistant you cc on email, plus booking links. We include it because a common question is “if I hand scheduling to an AI assistant, will it book over my deep-work blocks?” Skej has processed millions of meetings, and its documentation gives a partial answer.
What Skej says it does: it checks the calendars you select and “will not book over existing events” on them (Skej calendar help). It offers times only within your working hours (Skej availability help). It supports buffers of 5 minutes to 2 hours and a daily cap on meeting time (Skej buffers help). It doesn’t find or book focus blocks on its own (you can text it to block a time), and it doesn’t reshuffle existing meetings to make room (Skej boundaries). Your own instructions can override these settings: telling Skej a time you’re available, or asking it to force book a time (Skej buffers help). And an event marked “free” on your calendar counts as available (Skej changelog v1.9, Nov 22, 2024). Going by that entry, a focus block marked “free” wouldn’t stop Skej booking over it, so mark focus blocks “busy”.
If you want an AI to create and defend focus time, Reclaim and the Viva Insights focus plan are built for that job, and Skej isn’t.
Our ranking
This is an editorial judgment from what each vendor documents, considered qualitatively for this use case.
- Reclaim. It says it creates, defends and moves focus time around changes, and Focus Time is on the free plan (Reclaim pricing).
- Microsoft Viva Insights focus plan. It books up to 4 hours of focus a day, two weeks ahead, and mutes Teams chats during it, if your Microsoft license includes it. Rebuilding: Not described.
- Motion. It protects task time rather than generic focus time. That suits task-heavy people.
- Morgen. Planning needs your approval, so it may protect less when you’re busy.
- Google Calendar focus time. Manual blocks with optional auto-decline, so protection depends on placing them yourself.
- Skej (ours). It doesn’t create or rebuild focus time, per its own docs. It is here because people ask whether an AI assistant respects deep-work blocks.

Frequently asked questions
Do AI schedulers protect focus time?
Some do. Reclaim creates focus blocks from a weekly goal and can auto-decline meetings during them. Microsoft Viva Insights books up to 4 hours a day. Google Calendar lets you create blocks that auto-decline meetings. Most scheduling assistants do not create focus time.
What replaced Clockwise for focus time?
Clockwise shut down on March 27, 2026. Reclaim is the closest replacement, and it has a free plan. Viva Insights and Google Calendar focus time are options if you already pay for Microsoft 365 or eligible Workspace plans.
Will an AI assistant book over my focus blocks?
It depends on the tool. Skej says it will not book over existing events on the calendars you select, but its changelog says events marked “free” count as available, so mark focus blocks “busy”.
Is Google Calendar focus time free?
It is built into eligible Google Workspace plans, including Business Standard and Plus, and Enterprise. Business Starter is not listed. You create the blocks yourself.
